Happiness was never for me
as it seemed to be for you.
But I guess sometimes
we make believe what isn’t true.

I knew that smile on your face
was more a symbol,
a way to hide your disgrace.

Still, the world only saw
what they needed to see.
They missed that happiness
eluded you as well as me.

BB

Why is the world your enemy
when we all know the truth?
The only one you’re fighting
is simply a form of you.

You think the world’s against you
and so your fight with all your strength
but what lines will you cross
and to what distant lengths?

Maybe soon you’ll realize
that the enemy is you
then what you’re fighting for
will come apart at the glue.

Dream Girl

I knew the moment I saw you
that you were the one for me
and then a moment later
I woke abruptly from my dream.

It’s you who holds my heart,
a mystery you may be
but in my waking dreams
you are the one for me.

Our beings have never met,
but our souls are best of friends
and no matter what life brings,
fate brings us together in the end.

I may not know you yet,
but yet I’ve known for just so long
that you’re the one for me,
there’s just no way I’m wrong.

Mice and Z’s

I must have overslept
or perhaps stayed up all night.
Either way I have forgotten
what I meant to write.

I could tell you lies
or I could just go back to sleep
and let the words stay
in my own head to keep.

I must have lost track
of all time and day
but such trivial things
just get in a cat’s way.

So back to sleep I head
and dreaming I will do
since mice and z’s don’t catch themselves,
a fact cats know is true.

Gentle Contradiction

Like the moon showing her face
with the backdrop of blue sky,
you are a gentle contradiction
in a certain beholder’s eye.
An early spring anomaly,
or a bitter fall day,
your leaves are always changing
as you leave sunshine in your wake.
Hopeless and hopeful,
my ragged heart beats on,
hanging on the words you say
wondering if it’s night or dawn.

Best That You’ll See

When will you get it?
I do what I want.
So no matter your wishes
I’ll go on this jaunt.

I’ll sleep in this bed
and I’ll eat on this shelf.
I’ll do as I please;
it’s good for my health.

Your commands are pointless
and your wishes for not.
Your demand are futile
and your hopes, distraught.

But look on the bright side
at least you’ve got me
and I know for a fact
I’m the best you’ll ever see.

Battle of the Bands

The strings don’t twang
like the steel pedal guitar
but they beat the country back,
a classical superstar.
An instrumental interlude
overlaps movement two
and cowboy boots start tapping,
the conductors baton eschewed.

Each ensemble battles,
vying for center stage
and music to my ears
mingles on the page.
The battle lingers on
but the end is soon near
as static takes the waves
and each station becomes unclear.
